Theo Abazis

Born in Athens in 1967. He studied piano and music theory at the National Conservatory and the N. Skalkottas Conservatory (1983-86), as well as acting at the Hatzikou Higher Drama School (1985-87). He studied composition and orchestral conducting, with a scholarship from Onassis Foundation, at the Utrechts Conservatorium (1986-93). From 1993 to 1995, he attended the composition classes of Professor Dimitri Terzakis at the Music Academy of Bern. In 2016, he participated as a stage director in the International Performing Arts Festival in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. In 2006, he was awarded the Dimitris Mitropoulos Award by the Hellenic Centre of Theatrical Research – Theatre Museum. That same year, he participated as a stage director in the Cairo International Festival of Contemporary and Experimental Theatre. In 2001, he represented Megaron The Athens Concert Hall in the Rising Stars European programme. In 2000, he represented Greece at the Turin Biennale, where a special tribute was paid to his entire compositional work. In 1996, he represented Greece at Copenhagen, European Capital of Culture. In 1993, he was one of the six young composers from around the world selected by the International Dance Trust to participate in the International Seminar for Professional Composers and Choreographers in Wakefield, England. He has served as Artistic Director of the International Festival of Arts in Ancient Olympia (2020-22), Deputy Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Greece (2016-20), Artistic Director of the Municipal and Regional Theater of Patras (2013-16) and Artistic Director of the Municipal and Regional Theater of Kavala (2010-13). He is a founding member of the Music Theatre Group Amsterdam and the OΠΕRA Theatre Group. He teaches acting and improvisation at Athens Conservatoire Drama School, Delos Drama School and Piraeus Association Drama School. He has directed numerous theatre and opera productions and has composed music for theatre and film, symphonic music, opera, chamber music, music for dance etc.
