Nikos Kypourgos

Born in Athens in 1952. He studied music theory and contemporary techniques with Yannis A. Papaioannou and also studied law and political science at the University of Athens. He continued his musical studies in Paris (1979-83), on a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation, at the Conservatoire, as well as with Max Deutsch, Iannis Xenakis and others. He also studied ethnomusicology and music pedagogy. He has written musical theatre works (opera, musicals, musical comedy), vocal and orchestral music, music for dance, songs, music for the theatre (National Theatre, National Theatre of Northern Greece, Karolos Koun Art Theatre, I nea SKINI, Embros Theatre, Spyros A. Evangelatos Amphitheatre, Neos Kosmos Theatre, Théâtre du Soleil, etc.) and for the cinema (70 films, Greek and international). His works Silence, the King is Listening (commissioned by The Athens Concert Hall Organisation, 1994), Beware, the Prince is Messy (GNO commission, 2013) and Medea (GNO commission, 2019) have been performed at the GNO. His music has been honoured with more than 15 awards in Greece and abroad.
