T.B.A.
The Greek National Opera (GNO) was founded in 1939 thanks to the initiative of Kostis Bastias, an author and journalist, director of the Royal (National) Theatre and Director of Arts and Letters in the authoritarian 4th of August Metaxas Regime. Its founding followed a 150-year long flourishing operatic tradition on the Ionian Islands, unoccupied by the Ottomans, as well as half a century of activity of the most important Greek private opera company, known as Hellenic Melodrama (1888-1943). In the beginning, the newly founded company operated as part of the Royal Theatre and gave performances at its main stage on Aghiou Constantinou street.
From the outset, the Greek National Opera repertoire comprised operas, operettas and ballets. The company was inaugurated with the operetta Die Fledermaus, followed by Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Maria Kalogeropoulou (Callas) made her debut with the company, interpreting lead roles in operas such as Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fidelio, Eugen D’Albert’s Tiefland and Manolis Kalomiris’ The Masterbuilder.
In 1944, before the Liberation from the German occupation, the company was separated from the National Theatre and embarked on its independent course, under the name Greek National Opera. It was housed at the old Olympia Theatre on Academias street. Its first production was Rhea, an opera by Greek composer Spyridon-Filiskos Samaras. The company’s first director was the composer Manolis Kalomiris.
In 1958 the newly-built Olympia Theatre was inaugurated with Verdi’s Aida. The company’s repertoire was significantly expanded in the years that followed, giving prominence to its educational mission, in keeping with a philosophy corresponding to today’s concept of cultural management. Every artistic period would comprise about 20 productions, while about 30 works in total received their Greek premiere. The repertoire covered all periods, from baroque to contemporary works, and all schools, from the Italian, French and German school to the national schools of Eastern Europe and the works of Greek composers. Important performances were staged at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus as well as at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, starring Maria Callas.
This promising artistic development was interrupted by the military regime of 1967. In the seven-year period that followed the coup, the Greek National Opera introduced its regular annual monthly season in Thessaloniki, where almost all works of each artistic season were presented. After the restoration of democracy in 1974, a new generation of Greek artists were invited to the theatre, breathing new life to it. In the hard years of political transition, worthy directors have been at the helm of the GNO, supporting and ensuring its development and artistic growth, despite the financial and institutional challenges. Converting the GNO to a Legal Entity of Private Law (1994) boosted its development even further. A policy of co-productions with leading opera houses from abroad was gradually developed and started flourishing from 2000 onwards. The repertoire’s substantial expansion was followed by a visual upgrade of the operatic spectacles as well as by the organization’s international promotion. In parallel, the policy of extroversion, through outreach events throughout the country, has led to audience expansion.
On 23 February 2017 the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, which comprises the new home of the Greek National Opera, was handed over to the Greek state. The company’s first performances were presented in both of its venues, the Stavros Niarchos Hall and the Alternative Stage, during the trial period, in spring 2017.
Our mission is to offer audiences – at home and abroad – high-calibre productions, by presenting operas, ballets, operettas, operas for children and music recitals, among others.
Our organisation also encompasses the GNO Professional School of Dance, as well as educational programmes aimed at all age groups.
Performances are held at Greek National Opera's two stages at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (Stavros Niarchos Hall and Alternative Stage), as well as at the open-air Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
The repertory of Greece’s only opera company covers four centuries of lyrical theatre, from the works of Claudio Monteverdi to those of contemporary composers.
Stavros Niarchos Founcation Cultural Center is a public space, where everyone has free access and can participate in a multitude of cultural, educational, athletic, environmental and recreational activities and events. It includes the Greek National Opera, the National Library of Greece as well as the Stavros Niarchos Park, one of the largest green areas in Athens, covering 21 hectares.
Designed by architectural firm Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the SNFCC was created thanks to an exclusive grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) [www.SNF.org], which delivered it to the Greek State upon completion. The SNFCC has received numerous architectural awards including the 2018 Award for International Excellence by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The SNFCC is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s [www.SNF.org] largest single grant, which covered exclusively the cost for its design, construction, and outfitting. Furthermore, the SNF supported the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece with a €5m grant to each in order to support the organizations’ transition to the SNFCC. After SNFCC’s delivery to the Greek State, SNF continued to support it, with €5 million for its operational costs and €5 million for the implementation of free to all events and activities per annum for the first 5 years of its operation.
The Stavros Niarchos Park covers 21 hectares and includes over 1,400 trees and 300,000 shrubs. It is a real-time sustainability laboratory, as well a space hosting sports, cultural events and recreational activities. The park offers a new alternative perspective of urban green spaces and their use. It invites the public to explore its different areas: to do some gardening at the Vegetable Garden, to experiment at the Sound Garden, to exercise at the Running Track, the Outdoor Gym and the Outdoor Games Area as well as the seawater Canal, to enjoy concerts at the Great Lawn, to relax at the Labyrinth and to play at the Playgrounds. The SNFCC is a sustainability paradigm on three different levels: design & construction, operation and environmental footprint on the local ecosystem.
The design and the construction of the SNFCC including the Stavros Niarchos Park contributed in the reshaping of the Kallithea neighborhood of Athens and the waterfront, giving life to a space that for years remained abandoned.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a public space open to all. The high-quality free events and activities organized, realized and hosted by the SNFCC, as well as the staff and collaborators’ professionalism, made the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center a reference point in the greater Athens area, thus redefining the concept of public space.
SNFCC S.A. is a public-benefit nonprofit organization responsible for the operation, maintenance and management of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and the Stavros Niarchos Park while developing and organizing its own series of cultural, educational, environmental and sports activities. In 2017-18, the SNFCC organized more than 7.000 free events and activities, while it welcomed over 8.3m visits. SNFCC S.A. is supervised by the Greek Ministry of Finance.
Moreover, the new building for the National Library of Greece (NLG) modernized an institution founded in 1832, allowing it to strengthen its research role while expanding, at the same time, its focus from an exclusive research facility to an all-inclusive public resource. In its new and enlarged role, the NLG supports patrons of all ages and education - from academic researchers to children and young adults destined to become the next generation of users.
Within its new premises, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the entrance to the National Library of Greece leads into a large open lobby that provides an immediate visual orientation to all the organization’s functions. The NLG Public Library Section, bolstered by a significant book collection and other media, includes separate areas for adults, teenagers, and children and offers a wide range of educational and cultural programs. The natural light available throughout the NLG helps create an open hospitable environment for individual and collaborative learning. Events and seminars hosted for both children and adults, and classes incorporate natural learning opportunities originating from collaborative programs at the Stavros Niarchos Park as well.
Become an SNFCC Member and enjoy the specially designed Members events, backstage experiences, benefits and discounts!

The SNFCC Membership Program is implemented with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and developed in collaboration with the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera.
The Greek National Opera would like to thank the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, its Co-President Mr Andreas C. Dracopoulos, the Board Members and all the executives of the Foundation for their priceless contribution and unequivocal support to the work of the GNO. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s [www.SNF.org] grant for the construction and equipment of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center proceeded at an impressive pace, and as a result of that, in 2017 Athens acquired a milestone work that has already become a destination, a meeting point and a place of contemporary cultural creation for thousands of Athenians and visitors of the city. The facilities of the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece have already become an object of admiration attracting raving reviews from thousands of visitors and the Greek and international media. However, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s contribution to the Greek National Opera has not only been limited to the construction of its new facilities but it now runs through every aspect of its operation. Already since 2015 the SNF [www.SNF.org] has taken the initiative to support the Greek National Opera and the National Library with a 5 million euro grant, to each organization respectively, to cover the needs of their transition to the SNFCC. This grant allowed these institutions to meet their needs in equipment, know-how, training and, mostly, to develop a new content, linked to their new era at the SNFCC. The Greek National Opera through this grant has managed, among others, to retrain its staff and improve its skills, preserve part of its sets and costumes, develop a Department for Education and Social Programmes, and staff and create from scratch the artistic programme of its Alternative Stage. The Alternative Stage is an artistic space which summarises the philosophy behind the choices of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation: a space of contemporary and restless creation, accessible to all, aiming at many audience categories at the same time and investing in education and social return. Through the Alternative Stage, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation morphs into an vital cultural work, a living art of our time. The support to the sole opera house in Greece, the Greek National Opera, offered by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation constitutes a major national benefaction. We are very thankful for all that has been achieved and we set the foundations for what is yet to come.
On Thursday, January 3, 2019, the Co-President of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Mr. Andreas Dracopoulos, and the Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera, Mr. Giorgos Koumendakis, announced a major new grant of €20 million by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) [www.SNF.org] to the Greek National Opera (GNO).
The grant will support the implementation of a four-year programming and development plan that will enhance the artistic outreach of the GNO and the promotion of its work abroad. This plan includes the development of targeted artistic collaborations, co-productions, guest productions, and international tours that will contribute to the formation of a new artistic identity for the GNO.
The grant will also support a year-long program of events to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, while at the same time a large promotional campaign in major media outlets across the world will amplify the GNO’s international appeal.
The Co-President of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Mr. Andreas Dracopoulos, stated: “The relationship between the SNF and the GNO is not circumstantial or ephemeral. The SNF has been supporting the GNO for years. From supporting the GNO’s outreach to society at large, even before the construction of the SNFCC [the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center], the establishment of its new facilities, the development of the new Alternative Stage, and the inclusion of vulnerable groups through its educational activities, we have stood side by side with the GNO to support its goal to progress. For us, as Greek citizens, the GNO stands as a national treasure. We deeply appreciate the vision, the “philotimo” and the dedication that the people of the GNO exhibit, under the guidance of Giorgos Koumendakis. Within the framework of the excellent and harmonious cooperation that we have had over the years, we continue to support the GNO in claiming its place in the sphere of opera theaters, through synergies with international operas, artists, and composers. In addition, with the new SNF [www.SNF.org] grant, the GNO, this significant national cultural organization, will participate with all its might in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821.”
The Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera, Mr. Giorgos Koumendakis, stated: “The new four-year grant by the SNF [www.SNF.org] to the GNO, totaling 20 million euros, which was just announced by Andreas Dracopoulos, will give great impetus to our international presence. It will substantially support our artistic vision and essentially help us to work systematically towards a truly new artistic identity, the first examples of which we have already exhibited in the two years we have been here, at the SNFCC. The announcement of this new grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, beyond the great joy that it brings us, emphasizes our own commitment to developing an integrated four-year plan.
The main axes on which we will work systematically, with sensitivity and perspective, are the following:
- Partnerships, co-productions, collaborations with important lyrical—and other—theaters, ballets, and dance groups from around the world, in productions with a unique artistic point of view, which can take our artistic identity one step further.
- Guest appearances/residencies and performances by great conductors, directors, soloists, choreographers, stage designers, costume designers and dancers, who articulate a special artistic discourse, are at the cutting edge of their careers, and with whom we can develop an equal and creative relationship.
- The export of our artistic work. An essential need of the GNO, but also of modern Greek culture in general, is the targeted and systematic export of primary artistic creation. Greek artists, Greek ensembles, and our composers create artistic work of the highest quality and the time has come for this work to travel and become known outside of Greece. As you know, in recent years, the GNO has commissioned many new works, debuts and interesting artistic creations. This new grant will allow our performances to travel, the new musical works—already written and about to be written—will be presented in theaters and festivals, and Greek artists who deserve it will have the opportunity to try their creations with new audiences
- A year-long GNO tribute to the Greek Revolution of 1821. For 2021, as part of the 200th anniversary celebration of the Greek Revolution, we are planning new opera and ballet productions, commissions of new plays, and co-productions with important ensembles and distinguished Greek and foreign artists. The main objective of the tribute is to interpret the Greek Revolution as an international rather than local historical event, but also to demonstrate the connection with the revolutions that led to the creation of the major independent nations of the modern world, i.e., the French and American Revolutions.
- Lastly, in order to be able to showcase our artistic work inside and outside of Greece, part of the grant is allocated to the promotion of our organization.
I would like to thank Andreas Dracopoulos from the bottom of my heart, and publicly, for this very important contribution, the sustained support of the SNF to the GNO, and, above all, for his personal perseverance in rewarding the common good.
It is important to clarify that the new SNF [www.SNF.org] grant is in no way a substitute for the role of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which is responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning and survival of the GNO.”
Every organization is its people. In the people of the Greek National Opera we have found partners with whom we have built relations of mutual trust. We grow up and dream together. We set goals and face challenges. In this journey, from our side, we have the chance to let ourselves go and enjoy the magic of the opera as spectators, as well as the joy to be there for it as partners and Donors. From the announcement of the plans to create the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, to the “Suitcase Opera” initiative, the Journey to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the “birth” of the Alternative Stage and the support and expansion of its Educational Programmes and Social Activities - through each stage, we had the honour to walk side by side with the GNO as it was making its steps toward opening up to a continuously expanding audience, by offering to it what it needed in order to make its big transition to its new home and add new elements to its main activities and programmes: staff training, equipment upgrade and musical instruments purchase, international co-productions and educational workshops. The GNO’s successful debut at its new home was confirmed by the admittedly warm response of the people. We renew our presence, we stand by the people of the GNO, we embrace the ideas, the professionalism and the will to innovate, and we wish for days of creativity and uplift through the art offered to us by the Greek National Opera. Thank you.
Andreas C. Dracopoulos, Co-President of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation

Musical theatre without dogmatism
Modern creation, education, social return
The Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre – with director Alexandros Efkleidis at the helm since February 2017 – starting from musical theatre in all its possible forms, has already evolved, during its short period of operation, into a significant cultural agent, whose mark is evident on the three-fold goal it serves: modern creation, education, social return. An equally considerable emphasis is placed on original artistic creation, through a systematic policy of commissions, and on the development of a creative dialogue between younger and established music and theatre artists.
The trial period of operation of the Alternative Stage, which has a capacity of 300-400 seats (depending on the setting of each spectacle), began in the second half of the 2016/2017 season, after the official handing over of the SNFCC from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to the Greek State. It is a multiform hall with excellent acoustics, which has the appropriate infrastructure both for supporting high level productions and encouraging experimentation and innovation.
The founding donor of the GNO Alternative Stage is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which, apart from its first donation for the GNO’s relocation that served as the yeast for the creation of the institution (initially under the guidance of Giorgos Koumendakis), continues to support with a second donation the Alternative Stage and its Educational and Social Activities, recognizing their importance for the GNO’s new era at the SNFCC.
The Greek National Opera's education programme, “Interactive Opera for Primary Schools” began in May 2012 and completed successfully in June 2013 with the participation of 70 primary schools in different parts of Greece. The programme is being conducted within the framework of the “Education and Lifelong Learning” scheme and is co-funded by the European Union (European Social Fund) and the Greek state (National Strategic Reference Framework 2007-2013).
After the completion of the first and the second tour whereas 122 schools participated in total, the educational programme continues furthermore to 25 primary schools throughout Greece, in the coming period until Οctober 2015.
Pupils at the schools participating in the programme are given the opportunity to learn about the world of opera from an insider's perspective by taking part in all the different steps of producing an opera, in this case Gioachino Rossini's The Barber of Seville. The first part of the programme begins before the arrival of the Greek National Opera's education team with students constructing some of the props that are needed for the production with the help of their teachers.
Once the GNO team arrives, Day 1 is dedicated to workshops in which they play theatrical games and learn to express themselves through music and movement, as well as the visual arts, with the aim making a first acquaintance with the musical theatre, and with opera more specifically. The GNO Educational Orchestra also takes part in the workshops, allowing the children to meet the conductor and the soloists, as well as dancers. The day ends with a rehearsal for the opera's finale that includes the participation of the school's choir.
On Day 2 the workshops continue with the kids learning about the work done behind the scenes by the lighting technicians, the wardrobe assistants, the make-up artists, and the assistant director. The day ends with the performance, in which the children sing along with the choir, to an audience made up of their parents, teachers and peers.

Hélène, the Beautiful Helen, the figure we have encountered so many times in school books, in a story that changes, shapes and becomes shaped differently over the years, is our production’s central character. This time, we meet her in Kornilios Selamsis’ opera Offenbach’s La belle Hélène to a libretto by Alexandra K*, in a new fresh and contemporary version presenting us with the known myth in a colourfoul, melodious and – most of all – funny way. As the title shows, the work is based on Jacques Offenbach’s famous operetta La belle Hélène.
The new work is based on the much-loved operetta of the father of French operetta, Jacques Offenbach’s La belle Hélène, although it is a new opera. As the composer notes, it is “a blend of two musical ventures: on the one hand of Offenbach’s old and popular comic operetta and on the other hand of a new opera – or perhaps of a music theatre work with fragments of the past trapped inside it”. The libretto – based on the original text of Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy – has been penned by Alexandra K* and the production is staged by distinguished composer Yannis Kalavrianos. Τhe set, costumes and the video animation have been designed by Petros Touloudis, the movement by Marianna Kavallieratou and the lighting by Nikos Vlasopoulos. The musical direction is shared by Stathis Soulis and Kyriaki Kountouri, while the cast and the instrumental ensemble consist of a plethora of talented Greek soloists and musicians.
The story is based on the known Greek myth and is set in Sparta and Nafplion. It introduces us to the myth of the Beautiful Helen of Troy through a modern and hilarious approach that treats issues of gender stereotypes, roles and identities. As noted by the director: “We have tried to grasp the concerns of modern-day teenagers with the utmost sincerity.”
Synopsis of the work
28 July 1194 B.C. A party in Sparta. Behind us stands Jupiter’s temple and in front of us, ladies and gentlemen, behold…. The Trojan War. Do not be alarmed though, we are not going to miss our holiday at the beach. The Trojan War hasn’t started yet because Hélène … has not yet been abducted. Whoopsie! Spoiler alert!
A’ ACT
The story begins at the Spartan agora, where all heroes are gathered to discuss. Pâris disguised as a shepherd meets the seer Calchas. He gives him a letter from goddess Aphrodite that makes Calchas realise who the shepherd really is. Pâris tells the story of the apple of discord, explaining why he is in Sparta. Hélène is peeking at Pâris and the two of them are soon introduced to each other. The action is moved to the intelligence tournament in Sparta, in which Achille, Ajax and Bacchis are taking part. The competition begins, but contestants cannot find the correct answer to the first test. Hélène, wanting to help Pâris, sends him the answer through a young maid. Paris answers correctly and the crowd cheers for the winner. The tests continue and Paris turns out to be the big winner of the games. After the end of the games, Calchas tells Ménélas that by Zeus’ order he must immediately go to Crete.
B’ ACT
A month later and while Ménélas is on Crete, Hélène spends her time knitting in her room. At night Pâris stands outside her door. One evening he decides to knock on her door, but Hélène refuses to let him in. They just stay there talking to each other behind the closed door. Pâris, angry, is ready to leave, but Hélène eventually decides to open the door. Between dream and reality, she converses with Pâris and comes closer to him. Yet all this stops with Ménélas’ unexpected arrival in Sparta. Ménélas accuses Hélène of infidelity, the situation becomes complicated, and Hélène asks Pâris to leave Sparta.
C’ ACT
A week later all the heroes are in Nafplion. In the summer resort of Sparta the heroes are swimming, dancing and drinking. While they are endlessly partying, goddess Aphrodite, enraged with the Spartans who stood in the way of Pâris and Hélène’s affair, takes revenge on them by making Spartan women roam wildly, freely celebrating love and forgetting all social conventions. Hélène and Ménélas continue fighting over her infidelity, while Agamemnon and Calchas are trying to convince Ménélas to let her go. A ship arrives in Nafplion. It enters the port and Pâris appears disguised as the Great Seer of Aphrodite. Everyone welcomes him joyously and respectfully. Pâris, as the Seer, asks for Hélène to be transferred to Kythera, saying that this is a request from goddess Aphrodite. While Hélène recognises Pâris, Ménélas and the rest of the heroes accept the goddess’ will and hand Hélène over to the Great Seer.
The story ends with Hélène leaving together with Pâris while warning Ménélas and Agamemnon that her flight to Troy should not become the cause of a war, as Pâris did not violently seize her; she decided to follow him at her own will instead.

The Greek National Opera is expanding its social policy by introducing a new programme titled GNO for All. As part of its shared vision with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to enhance the GNO’s artistic outreach and further broaden its audience, the Greek National Opera will offer 10,000 free tickets for performances at the Stavros Niarchos Hall to individuals aged 17 to 22, seniors aged 65 and over, large families, and unemployed citizens. The programme is made possible by an exclusive grant from the SNF.
In recent years, the Greek National Opera has provided over 30,000 free tickets for dress rehearsals and performances to unemployed citizens and individuals with disabilities. Now, thanks to the renewed support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) with a two-year grant, the GNO is expanding its social policy through a new programme called GNO for All, which will provide 10,000 beneficiaries the chance to experience the arts of opera and ballet by attending performances at the Stavros Niarchos Hall for free during the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons. The programme is aimed at individuals 17 to 22, seniors aged 65 and over, large families, and unemployed citizens. Individuals in these categories can register for the programme starting 7 November 2024 at nationalopera.gr/lyrikigiaolous. The 10,000 free tickets will be made available through an electronic lottery drawing system that will ensure the fairness of the procedure.
By registering to the platform, those eligible to participate in the programme will have the chance to select their preferred performance or performances to attend. For each performance, a specific number of free seats will be available through the GNO for All programme in all seating zones of the Stavros Niarchos Hall. A special lottery drawing will be held for each production to be presented at the Stavros Niarchos Hall, and the winners will be notified accordingly. Each beneficiary of a free ticket will be able to invite one additional guest of their choice.
