For one week during the festive season, from 25 December 2024 to 1 January 2025, the Greek National Opera will allow free access to all its performances on GNO TV [tv.nationalopera.gr]. The online platform of the Greek National Opera, which has already completed three years of operation and counts thousands of subscribers worldwide, continues to offer new content and showcase the work of the GNO across the world. GNO TV was launched and is run with the support of a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) [www.SNF.org] to enhance the Greek National Opera’s artistic outreach.

On Christmas day, the 25th of December, the starting day of the free viewing week, four long-anticipated productions of the Greek National Opera will premiere on GNO TV, complementing its rich content.
Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata, filmed at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in July 2024, brings to our screens the opera superstar Nadine Sierra in the role of Violetta Valéry, sought-after tenor Freddie de Tommaso, international Greek baritone Dimitri Platanias, and a large cast of protagonists along with the GNO Orchestra, Chorus, and Ballet. The production is directed and choreographed by Konstantinos Rigos and conducted by Pier Giorgio Morandi.
The Alternative Stage production Strella, a chamber opera by Michalis Paraskakis, based on Panos H. Koutras’ film of the same title, featuring a libretto by Alexandra K*, musical direction by Konstantinos Terzakis, and stage direction by George Koutlis, brings to GNO TV a fascinating story about love, acceptance, and the madness of dreaming and demanding happiness at all costs.
A while after its premiere at Teatro Colón in Argentina, as well as at the Alternative Stage in Athens, and in Thessaloniki, Pablo Ortiz’s bold contemporary chamber opera Kassandra, featuring a libretto by Sergio Blanco, brings to our screens the unique performance of transgender soprano María Castillo de Lima. The production is directed by Diana Theocharidis and Alexandros Efklidis and features the musicians of Ergon Ensemble under the baton of Nicolas Vassiliou.
The GNO Ballet’s performance Point of No Return presents a modern dance piece with movement elements deeply rooted in the classical ballet tradition. With music composed by Giorgos Koumendakis and choreography created by Ioannis Mandafounis, the GNO Ballet dancers deliver a performance based on the transparency and authenticity of movement inspired by classical ballet steps.

At the same time, GNO TV is continuing to provide the following productions for streaming –

GNO TV [tv.nationalopera.gr] at a glance

GNO TV was launched in late 2020 to showcase the artistic output of Greece’s only opera house to audiences worldwide, expanding the very concept of artistic outreach. GNO TV aims to reach a worldwide audience of opera enthusiasts, as GNO’s artistic identity and high-quality productions can compete effectively in the global online opera market.

GNO TV offers a wide variety of shows, ranging from operas and ballet performances staged in the Stavros Niarchos Hall to operettas, music theatre performances, and festivals presented on the Alternative Stage, as well as shows for the whole family, online festivals, and educational programmes.

GNO TV performances are streamed through the Akamai global content delivery network – an on-demand platform that gives audiences the chance to watch GNO productions in the comfort of their own homes, whenever and as many times as they like, for one full month starting from their first stream.

GNO TV productions are filmed using a multi-camera set-up. They are especially directed for the screen and broadcast subtitled in Greek and other languages (English, as well as French, and/or German, where indicated).

The project is funded by the Ministry of Culture, as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, which is financed by the European Union – NEXT GENERATION EU.
