The GNO Learning & Participation Department invites teenagers aged 14 to 18 from various schools and neighbourhoods in Attica to participate in the fifth cycle of the intercultural opera hub Co-OPERAtive with the aim of creating and presenting a musical theater performance in June 2025 at the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the National Opera at the SNFCC. Every year, this educational programme hosts a group of 30 young individuals of diverse nationalities, including teenagers living in Athens and unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors, in a series of weekly workshops led by distinguished artists from the fields of music, theatre, and dance.  During the workshops, which last from November to June, participants develop a common artistic language and co-create their own original music theatre work under the guidance of experienced art professionals. The final piece is presented in a performance to a wide audience upon the completion of the programme.  

This year’s team of animators will include Panos Iliopoulos (composer, musician), Markellos Chryssicos (conducting), Vassilis Vilaras (director), Lemonia Gianniri (dramaturgy), Pavlos Thanopoulos (set & costume designer), Ilias Hatzigeorgiou (dancer, choreographer). This time, the creative team will be inspired by Franz Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey), which is based on the poetry of German poet Wilhelm Müller. The final performance will take place in the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera on 7 June 2025.

During the programme, the Co-OPERAtive group members will have the opportunity to explore and develop their talents, enhance personal skills, communicate through the language of music and music theatre, and explore the meaning of love, homeland and separation.

Furthermore, participants will also have the chance to attend dress rehearsals and opera, music theatre, and ballet performances, talk to professionals from the GNO, get acquainted with all the stages of producing an opera firsthand, and ultimately, showcase their own work on the GNO Alternative Stage. Foregrounding opera’s cooperative nature, the programme places collaboration at the heart of its planning and implementation, while continuing its partnership with European Expression and Kinoniko EKAV for one more year.

Participation in the programme does not require specialized music, theatre, or dance knowledge. However, any prior amateur or professional experience with the aforementioned art forms will be taken into consideration during the application evaluation process. What’s most important is the applicants’ enthusiasm to participate in the programme, their interest, and availability on the days the workshops, rehearsals, and final performance will be held.
