AUDITION FOR SUPERNUMERARIES

 

The Greek National Opera is seeking female and male actors as supernumerary extras for its production of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot directed by Andrei Şerban, to be presented at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on 1, 3, 5, 6 and 8 June 2025. Their appearances in this production will be based on stylized movement and action, involving work at height, climbing, use of weaponry, athletic interventions, some acrobatic work and interaction with the set design elements, dancers, and principal singers. Experience in physical theatre, dance, movement improvisation, acrobatic material, martial arts, Tai chi or parkour skills are an asset.

Performers required:

MALE

  • 5 men with athletic appearance, height 1.80-1.90 m., strong backs and arms, who are fully fit and comfortable with working at height, to perform roles of guards, soldiers etc.
  • 1 male for the part of the Executioner, which requires a strong, well-built male with an impressive, muscular body
  • up to 9 males for folk crowd, servants etc.

FEMALE

  • 6 females for folk crowd and Turandot’s maidens with stylised movement material

Further roles may be cast from this audition, as needed.

Rehearsals with the supernumeraries will start after 22 April 2025 and those selected should be fully available for the entire rehearsal period (rehearsals and performances, 22/4 - 8/6/2025).

The audition will take place on Friday, 6 September 2024 at the GNO venue at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC), from 17:00 to 20:00 and will be conducted by Choreographer Kate Flatt and Associate Choreographer Georgia Tegou as follows:

  • 45-min. warm-up, male and female folk movement tasks, interactive material and improvisation
  • 45 mins. of physical theatre tasks. A smaller group of actors will be selected from this process
  • 60-min. call back to work with smaller group for final selections - further sequences
  • 15- cool down

The audition may be video-recorded for archival purposes.

Applications that do not include any of the above will not be considered. Please note that those selected to work with GNO in this production must also have Greek residency and work permits, a Greek Tax Identification Number (AFM), and a Greek Social Security Number (AMKA). The deadline for applications is Monday, 26 August 2024 at 14:00. The GNO will assess the validity of each application and the Choreographers will select the applicants that will be invited to audition.  The GNO will then notify by email these applicants by Tuesday, 3 September.

The G.N.O ensures that the applicants’ personal data is kept strictly confidential. Only the persons within the G.N.O who are authorized to do so will have access to the applications, as well as the choreographers only for the period leading up to the conclusion of the audition.
