Visualizing Sound

Written by

In the Visualizing Sound movement workshop, people with or without sensory disabilities interact, express themselves, and mainly feel by using exclusively their body to produce music. This is body music, the most ancient form of music. A form of expression that combines rhythm, movement and music and allows for the participant to live an unprecedented musical experience. Through the exploration of space and the potential of body sounds, original soundscapes based on contemporary dance techniques, improvisation and body music will be created, while at the same time the kinaesthetic perception, the ability to read and produce sound through one’s body, the handling of expressive means, communication and the stimulation of imagination will be developed.

PARTICIPATION IS FREE ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS

Registration Period: September – October 2018

Stravinsky Miniatures

Written by

For Stravinsky with love

Having as a baseline the avant-garde and bold Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s (1882-1971) work, young musicians and choreographers are invited to create new music and dance works, that will be short and comprehensive and full of fresh ideas. Le sacre du printemps (1913), Le Rossignol (1914/1917/1920) and Les Noces (1932), three emblematic works which were written for the Russian Ballets and contributed to the establishment of the composer’s reputation, serve as a source of inspiration for young composers and choreographers, by giving them the chance to express their creativity and experiment without boundaries or limitations. Through an open contest process, seven new music works will be selected and performed by select dancers of the GNO Ballet School. And there’s more. Stravinsky Miniatures will be completed in April 2019 with the production of seven videos that will have recorded all the preparation stages of the works. The projection of the videos will take place in parallel with the performances of the Ballet’s three-fold tribute to Stravinsky. From Russia with love in the GNO venues at the SNFCC.

The selection of the artists will be made on the basis of an open call announced at www.nationalopera.gr

Transmedia Labworks

Written by

For four months, the rehearsals building of the Greek National Opera in Kallithea will be transformed into a sound and image factory. With the participation of 18 artists coming from the fields of music, sound and visual arts, selected via an open call, the new workshop, Transmedia Labworks, will focus on the relationship between opera and digital arts, interactive media and programming. Starting with Richard Strauss’s Elektra, the participants are called upon to experiment in order to redefine the concept of performative act in opera. The on-stage action will not be seen as a reproduction of narrative successions, received by the audience as an external observer, but as a spatial interactive experience, co-formed by the audience’s active participation. The aim of the Transmedia Labworks workshop is to create a series of experimental, cross-media and interactive audiovisual projections and interpretations of selected scenes from the foresaid opera. Transmedia Labworks will be completed by opening its doors to the public and by giving them the unique chance to become part of an exciting audiovisual experience. Exactly at the point where opera meets with digital cross-mediacy and computer interpretation.

MOAM: Moving music

Written by
What could refugee children and grandfathers and grandmothers in Athens have in common?

How can they practically co-exist? They do not speak the same language, they do not have the same age, they do not have the same experiences. Their only thing in common is the language and the memory of their bodies. The cross-generational workshop Moving Music brings in contact two groups of people that do not communicate with each other in their everyday life: unaccompanied minors and elderly people. Using as an instrument the sounds of their voices, the rhythms of their feet and the guidance of artists, the two groups come in contact, co-exist and co-create.

Here

Written by

A theatre and music workshop in collaboration with the street magazine “Schedia”, the Reception and Solidarity Centre of the Municipality of Athens and the Athens 2018 Global Book Capital project. With the support of the Athens Municipality Cultural Network. Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities offered the inspiration for the creation of a meeting point in the form of a workshop, titled Here, where people can meet and communicate through speech and sound. People who see the city through the eyes none of us has. Sounds produced in their primal form, creating an urban timbre that none of us has heard. Stories telling a personal trajectory in a city with many faces that none of us has noticed. Calvino’s approach of fantastic cities, in relation to the participants-experienced but invisible to the rest of us city of Athens, is the baseline for a fruitful interaction of speech and sound, stories and songs, theatre and music.
