Greek National Opera’s educational programme “Youth Opera” completes its third educational period with the presentation of W. A. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro in concert, at the Atrium of the Benaki Museum on Pireos Str., conducted by Michalis Papapetrou.
“Youth Opera” is a Greek National Opera educational programme targeted at young artists with the main goal of offering them the possibility to develop and present their skills in a work environment that is protected and supervised by acclaimed professionals. Participants are tested by taking part in productions presented at the Stavros Niarchos Hall, on the Alternative Stage and in other venues such as the Art Theatre. To this day, the participants in the programme have presented Mozart’s Idomeneo, Puccini’s diptych Suor Angelica and Il tabarro, Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito and Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi. The programme is run by distinguished tenor Angelo Simos.
The 2020 summer production of the GNO “Youth Opera” will not be staged, as in the past, due to this year’s restrictive measures against the spread of the coronavirus. In this context, Le nozze di Figaro will be presented in concert at the welcoming Atrium of the Benaki Museum, a place of special character and very good acoustics. The concert will be held with the participation of the Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Michalis Papapetrou.
The roles will be performed by the students of the 2019/20 “Youth Opera” programme, as well as by former students and acclaimed professionals: Giorgos Papadimitriou, Katerina Mirtsiou, Konstantinos Mavrogenis, Paraskevi Sykioti, Miranda Makrynioti, Maria Gougousi, Maxim Klonovsky, Andreas Karaoulis, Zoi Liapi, Michalis Katsoulis.
The “Youth Opera” educational programme was launched in autumn 2018 with the goal of offering young artists who have completed their training and start taking the first steps in their career, the possibility to acquire experience with the Greek National Opera. Participants in the programme are tested in a real work environment and take part in opera productions. Since the start of the programme many renowned artists have assumed the key role of mentor to the “Youth Opera”, such as Angelo Simos, Vassilis Papavassiliou, Angelo Cavallaro, Christina Yannakopoulou, Tassis Christoyannis, Sophia Kyanidou, Dimitris Tiliakos, Angeliki Kathariou, etc.
