POLIS Ensemble

It was founded in December 2011, initially as the Eastern Music Orchestra “Polis” in Athens. The word polis attempts to depict the cities of the Eastern Mediterranean, whose tradition has never ceased to inspire the members of the ensemble. Since the beginning of 2012, the sextet has performed in major concert halls (Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall, Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Stavros Niarchos Hall, Literary Society Parnassos, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University of Piraeus, Mikro Pallas), has presented its work at the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, and has participated in the EBU’s Euroradio Folk Music Spring and Easter Project 2021. POLIS Ensemble has collaborated with great composers, soloists, singers, actors, the Contemporary Music Orchestra of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation and various choral ensembles, has participated in Greek festivals and has travelled to Brussels at the invitation of the Metropolis of Belgium and the European Parliament. In 2021, they participated in the multifaceted programme 200 Years of Folk Singing, which was curated by the internationally renowned composer and conductor Stavros Xarchakos. The ensemble has released the albums Polis Ensemble (2017), Echos Hellenikos (2021) and Calanda (2023).
