The Intercultural Choir of the Greek National Opera will welcome summer with a unique concert on Wednesday 12 June 2024, at 20.30, in the Rehearsal room of the Greek National Opera Orchestra at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Admission will be free for the public.

The Intercultural Choir of the GNO completes its journey through world music this year by presenting a delightful programme that will blend tradition with folk minimalism and improvisation. With songs from Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria, Armenia, South Italy, Corsica, Estonia, England, and Central America, along with pieces by modern composers, the choir members will take us on a musical journey across diverse lands and times, unveiling the immediacy and power of voice and singing beyond traditional forms. Anna Linardou is the choir mistress and is also in charge of curating the programme, while Vasso Dimitriou is responsible for the arrangements. On the piano performing will be Dimitra Kokkinopoulou, on the double bass and live looping Michalis Kalkanis, and on percussion Alexis Nonis.

A few words about the Intercultural Choir

The Intercultural Choir was founded in 2017 by the Learning & Participation Department of the Greek National Opera. Since then it has hosted members from Turkey, Slovakia, Tanzania, New Guinea, Ukraine, Cameroon, Syria, Cyprus, the United Kingdom, France, the USA, Canada, Iran, Kenya, Congo, Iraq, Egypt, Serbia, Georgia, and Greece. It has given numerous concerts at the GNO Alternative Stage in the SNFCC, various squares in Athens, the “Eleftherios Venizelos” Athens International Airport, and the Summer Nostos Festival of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. It has also collaborated with the International Choir of the Gothenburg Opera under the baton of and on pieces by composer Trevor Grahl. Its constantly expanding repertoire includes songs from the countries where its members come from and beyond, while it keeps exploring the potential of the human voice.
